Every woman wants to live up to the current beauty standards. However, these standards seem to change almost every decade. Young girls come in contact with the stereotypes at an early age. These girls play with skinny Barbie dolls and this kind of toys are timeless. But even the Barbie dolls seem to change now. There is not only the skinny doll, but also the big and fat Barbie girls are available in the stores. The beauty standard of this decade can be described as the one with the ‘big and booty’ look. But this look has not always been popular and accepted in the fashion industry. The identity and appearance have change through the years:
1910 – The Gibson Girl
This was the decade of the small waste, long neck and big curly hair.

1920 – The Flapper
The beauty standard of this decade can be described as the ‘flat chested’ look.

1930 – The Soft Siren
These years the female curves and small waste was fashionable again.

1940 – The Star Spangled Girl
This was a sporty decade. The girls were encouraged to have wide shoulders in combination with a female waste.

1950 - The Hourglass
This decade can be described as the female decade. It was all about the hips, booty and small waste.

1960 - The Twig
The remarkable thing in this period was that it seemed that all the female curves flew away. The thin and no-shaped woman was the beauty standard.

1970 - The Disco Diva
In this period a straight body and wide shoulders were considerd as the beauty standard. Every woman had to be a Dancing Queen

1980 - The Supermodel
This decade focuses on long legs and a fit body.

1990 - The Waif
The ‘flat chested’ look seems to be back. Women were supposed to be small and thin.

2000 -The Buff beauty
The beauty standard of this decade focuses on a thin and fit body again. Women are encouraged to have arm muscles and abs.

2010 - The Booty Babe
The current decade is all about the booty. Women need to have curves and bass.
Nike promoted this beauty standard with their slogan ‘My butt is big’’. The music industry is full of songs and music clips about the booties. Nicki Minaj sings about her own big (fake) booty. One of the most famous booty rolemodels is Kim Kardashian. With a controversial photoshoot, Kim Kardashian showed the world how big her booty really is. It’s so massive that it’s possible to serve champagne on it and maybe even some crackers with cheese. These photo’s caused a lot of commotion because people thought that her booty was fake and the picture was photoshoped. The elderly people disapprove the picture of Kim Kardashian. The following clip on Youtube shows what elderly people thought of her picture. This clip also includes a summary of the changing identities and appearances throughout the last decades. Although Kim Kardashian is one of the world’s biggest idols, elderly people are no fans of the new beauty standards Kim Kardashian promotes.
