Cycling madness (her)

More and more people around the world cycle. Especially in Holland, it looks like people are born to cycle. The average is 800 kilometers a year. I also cycle a lot, especially when I went to High School. I lived in a small village and taking the bus wasn’t an option for me. I thought that bike would be a lot healthier, so I did. Everyday I cycled round 22 kilometers.

There must be particular reasons for the fact, that we cycle so much. Maybe one of them is the changing infrastructure. We have a few examples for that, like innovator Daan van Roosegaarde, created and opened a few months ago a 600 meters long light path. The path between Neunen and Einhoven contains glow in the dark stones, which make cycling really special. Also the worlds first solar bike lane has been installed in Holland. ‘Solaroad’ sets up this project. The solar bike line in the town of Krommenie is 70 meters long and will be a 100 by 2016. It produces enough solar energy to power three homes. Not only special projects were created to change the Dutch infrastructure. The government tries hard to make cycling safety and easier. A few weeks ago, they decided to make ‘de negen straatjes’, loacated in Amsterdam, free of cars. Likewise with the idea of making cycling more safety in busy streets. Because cycles require less space then cars. This ensures that cities can offer the possibility for more people to live in.
Wordwide, new initiatives are born. Even Macdonalds responds at the upcoming cycle culture, with their ‘McBike’. I guess, Macdonalds want to pretend like they are likewise healthy. However that doesn’t make it a bad idea, cause I thinks it’s great. Normally you had the Macdrive, where you can only place your order with a car or the Macdonalds restaurant. What if you are in a rush and you don’t have a care, but only your bike? Mcbike is the solution; it’s a food container that is designed specifically to fit onto bicycle handlebars. Each box contains a complete McDonald's meal including a burger, fries and a drink all packaged into one takeaway box. The idea was brought forth by Tribal Buenos Aires agency in Argentina and tested in for example Copenhagen and Medellin. This packaging is the perfect way for eco-friendly commuters to grab some food without having to stop and lock their bikes.
That the cycling culture may be bigger and bigger in the future can’t be missed. That’s the reason for Volvo to create something special and innovative. Because there’s no guarantee that cars will be as popular as now in the future. Volvo has a safety image. So why couldn’t you offer cyclists some extra safety? The ‘Lifepaint’ does. It’s a water-based spray, which can be sprayed on your bicycle and will reflect when some light comes on to it. Perfect for dark mornings and nights, to secure your safety!
Broke Bikes condole with the cycle culture. Their vision is: we believe that a bike should reflect our uniqueness as human beings. All created equal but everyone has his or her own personal touch. At the virtual workshop you can apply paint to the frame, mount different rims and choose between three different handlebar types. Allowing you to easily configure your bike in a million different ways to match your personality. The company obviously responds at the trend personalizing and the cycle madness.

It’s clear that cycling facilities will be bigger and bigger in the future. The reason why it affects the sustainability of our cities is; cycling takes less space in comparison with cars. So the cities can give more people company. Besides it stimulates the environment and safe our world for next generations.
